MITO, Japan — Japan’s Ibaraki Airport is trying to cement its status as a third hub in the Kanto region centering on Tokyo, along with Narita and Haneda airports. Deliberations are underway to draw up plans in time for the airport’s 15th anniversary in March.
The airport in Omitama, Ibaraki prefecture, north of Tokyo, served some 750,000 passengers in fiscal 2023, close to the target of 810,000 set when it began operating. Management hopes to raise the airport’s capacity, increasing the number of international flights it handles and expanding the terminal building, following similar moves by Narita and Haneda.
