Japan eyes Greenland icebreaker mission to counter Russia, China


TOKYO — Japan is aiming to counter an increasingly active Russia and China in the Arctic Ocean, dispatching its former top diplomat to Greenland on Thursday to discuss plans for an icebreaker ship research mission to the area.

Former Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa headed to Greenland to petition cooperation from the local government for the Mirai II, the first Japanese research vessel with icebreaking capabilities.
