TOKYO — The Democratic Party of Hong Kong, one of the city’s last formal pro-democracy forces, voted on Sunday to move forward with the process of disbanding, amid pressure from Beijing.
The vote marks a major step toward shutting down a party that had sought to safeguard freedoms for decades — the latest sign of narrowing space for even moderate opposing voices under the strict national security oversight China imposed five years ago.
