With IBM’s help, Rapidus seeks to cash in on U.S. supply chain push


TOKYO — Japanese chipmaker Rapidus began test production at its Hokkaido plant Tuesday, a milestone reached with technological support from IBM as the U.S. seeks to shore up supply chains for economic security.

In mid-March, the top semiconductor engineers for Rapidus began arriving in Hokkaido to help bring the plant online. They previously spent time at IBM’s research center in Albany, New York, to learn the latest chip design and production techniques.
