Japanese scallops whet world’s appetite amid China’s ban


TOKYO — Less than two years after China’s ban on Japanese scallops sparked fear of excess supply, the shellfish is enjoying high demand in other countries, fetching record prices at a Tokyo wholesale market.

Exports doubled on the year in value terms this January, with such buyers as the U.S., Thailand and Vietnam stepping up purchases. Wholesale prices in Tokyo have hit an all-time high.
