TOKYO — For Philippine voters in the mid-term elections in May, Japanese in the upper house poll in July, and Singaporeans in the general election in November, deciding who to vote for could be more arduous than before as disinformation becomes ever more sophisticated.
According to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, national-level elections were held last year in 78 countries and regions, including 11 in Asia, and many saw the spread of AI-generated images, video and audio of politicians. Among the Asian polls, Nikkei confirmed fake posts in at least eight countries and regions.
