Malaysia hosts key ASEAN meeting ahead of Trump’s return

LANGKAWI, Malaysia — Foreign ministers from ASEAN member countries convene Sunday to discuss this year’s priorities for the Southeast Asian bloc, including the Myanmar and South China Sea issues, as the impending return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency adds to global uncertainties.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, hosted this year by Malaysia on the northern island of Langkawi, brings together top diplomats from the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with East Timor participating as an observer. Myanmar will be represented by a senior official instead of a minister.
