TOKYO/KUMAMOTO, Japan — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has begun mass production at its first fabrication facility in Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture, which will supply a wide range of chips that will be the most advanced ever made in the country.
Kumamoto Gov. Takashi Kimura told reporters Friday that Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, the TSMC unit operating the plant, notified him Monday of the launch. TSMC, which opened the plant in February, had aimed to start mass production by year-end.
