Japan’s Kirin to halve logistics workforce with AI-controlled automation


TOKYO — Japanese beverage maker Kirin Holdings has launched an artificial intelligence-controlled system that has the potential to halve the number of staff required for picking work, which is the sorting of products by delivery destination.

The system, called Sigma Synx, was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) with the aim of tackling the growing labor shortage in Japan’s logistics industry. It was first introduced at Kirin’s distribution center near Tokyo.
