SEOUL/TOKYO — Embattled South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late Tuesday night, only to have National Assembly overturn the move, as political tensions boiled over.
In a brief message carried by broadcaster YTN, Yoon invoked a provision in South Korea’s constitution that empowers the president to declare martial law, saying that the measure was necessary to protect the country’s democracy from “anti-state forces” linked to North Korea.
