Hybrids take center stage as economic gloom clouds Thai motor show


BANGKOK — Chinese carmakers unveiled new hybrid models at the biannual Bangkok motor show on Thursday, eschewing the electric vehicles that have made them household names in Thailand to attract cautious consumers saddled with high debt and low purchasing power.

The Thailand International Motor Expo 2024, a 12-day marquee event for the Thai auto industry that opens on Friday, appears unlikely to save what has been a bad year for the sector. The depressed market this week forced the Federation of Thai Industries to cut its annual production target by 200,000 units for the second time this year, to 1.5 million vehicles, down from an initial target of 1.9 million.
